ABOUT
Zohra is a vocalist dedicated to keeping the art of Ghazal music alive while embracing the diverse sounds of the South Asian diaspora. A Washington, D.C. native with deep roots in South Asian musical traditions, she blends the poetic elegance of Ghazal, the emotive depth of Bollywood and Sufi music, and the dynamic energy of contemporary South Asian sounds.
With over 15 years of experience collaborating across genres, Zohra’s journey has been shaped by a passion for both preserving tradition and pushing creative boundaries. She honed her craft as an apprentice at the Healing Khayal Residency in New York City, training under Ustad Naseeruddin Saami and his sons, The Saami Brothers Qawwali. Under their guidance, she deepened her understanding of the Delhi Gharana, refining her vocal technique, improvisation, and spiritual connection to Khayal, Qawwali, and Ghazal.
Zohra's multilingual approach includes singing in Urdu, Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, while exploring Telugu and Tamil- allowing her to connect with a wide range of audiences and bring a rich cultural depth to her performances.
She has also had the honor of sharing the stage with the legendary Alamgir, an icon of South Asian popular music, further affirming her commitment to preserving and evolving South Asian musical traditions. Whether performing a centuries-old Ghazal or reinterpreting a beloved classic, she is dedicated to creating music that connects, heals, and inspires.
For Zohra, music is more than just performance—it is a story, a bridge, and a connection between generations. Her journey continues to be one of discovery, honoring the past, while creating a space for heritage and innovation to coexist.
